When you first enter this boy's room you step into a bustling village that's ready for Christmas. His green antique hutch is the perfect backdrop for this festive theme.
Underneath the village, The Polar Express makes its way across the globe. Having just left London it's heading for the North Pole. My son and I both loved how I made this train fit onto the hutch in a curved manner. It reminds us of the danger ice scene from the movie and Brio wooden set.
These are plastic Cobblestone Village pieces from the Dollar Tree. I think they actually look quite cute in a boy's room. Sitting behind them is a vintage M&M's tin. I love the train and the continued village with a toy shop and folks riding in horse drawn sleighs.
I really do love to decorate with vintage tins and this is one of my favorites. It's a lid from a Christmas cookie tin and I love how it adds more of a background for this whole scene.
Another one of my favorite tins, as our own house is yellow. There's my daughter out front waiting for Grandma to arrive in the taxi.
I had the most fun putting together my son's bookshelf. I love using toys that my kids already own to decorate. It keeps costs low and shows them how to be truly creative. I made the snow out of cotton balls.
While I was cleaning my son's room to decorate I stumbled upon this disposable airplane. I was so excited because I knew it would look great in this scene. It was also perfect as this Christmas my husband's grandpa, who is a retired Air Force Pilot, came to spend Christmas with us.
We still have our kid's old baby blocks because they're fun to incorporate into wooden train towns. I had to include a pet shop here as Santa brought our own dog, Norman the Christmas Beagle, to us one year.
My son's bedside table took on a much more manly feel that went so well with the vintage train poster that I made for him as a disposable birthday party decoration. I really should look into getting this professionally printed.
Don't you just love the way small children place ornaments on a tree? It's really very charming, although as I watch it happen in real time I feel a major amount of stress. Still, I refrain from telling them where the ornaments should actually be placed in order to create the perfect look. If I did, I fear that would take away all of the fun for them.
These are a few of my son's knick knacks. Although Jesus is the reason for the season, I still enjoy the playful and magical vibes that children feel at Christmas time. It's so fun to receive toys when you are a kid so I placed a few of his special ones here to continue that theme with his Christmas tree. I really love the playful, but elevated feel that these particular things brought to this vignette.
Merry Christmas to all and to all Happy Decorating!
