Step 1 Begin by staining your white cloth. I used quite a bit of white fabric to make two adult costumes and two children's costumes so I went ahead and used brown RIT dye. You don't have to use very much as you just want to make the cloth look a little dingy. This process is easy to do in a large plastic storage tote. I did not dye the ivory burlap ribbon that I also used to wrap. Step 2 Wash the fabric and allow to dry. Once it's dry, lay it out on a cutting mat and use scissors or a roto cutter to make slits at one end of the fabric piece. I made my slits about 1 1/2 inches wide, but they certainly don't need to be exact. Now you can rip and tear off long strips. The frayed edges are perfect for this costume. Wait one second... I have to tell you about this super cute trick or treating candy bag that's available now in my Etsy shop. The opened sarcophagus is the perfect accessory for your mummy costume! I began by hot gluing the fabric strip to the inside inseam of the pants. Wrap the fabric strip around the article of clothing and glue down the other end. You will need to apply some small pieces of glue throughout in order to keep the fabric from falling down. I just mixed in a few pieces of the ivory burlap as I went about this process. You don't have to use the burlap, but I really enjoyed the added texture that it gave this costume. Tip It's very important to leave some slack as you glue so that when you put the clothing on it will not be too tight. This cordless hot glue gun is also a must have, trust me! I tried this project with a corded one at first. Save yourself! It would be very effective to glue the fabric strips on with everyone wearing their black shirt and pants, however, you just need to be careful not to burn anyone with the hot glue. A pair of rubber gloves would help the person who is applying the glue and whomever is wearing the costume, might be able to help by inserting their arm and pulling the fabric away from their skin and spreading their fingers so that there is a safe spot for the hot glue to be applied. This is how my husband and I finished up our costumes, but I probably wouldn't attempt to have children help if they haven't yet acquired the motor skills necessary to stay safe with the hot glue. Step 4 To complete this mummy costume, we each made a headband out of one strip of cloth. We tied a knot and that was it! As you can see my daughter is wearing a purple hair bow. We love to add feminine touches to our costumes and make it feel more personal to us. I opted for a more grown up look with my classic purple lipstick that I almost always don on Halloween with large pearl earrings, as well. Even the dead gotta keep it classy. The whole gang. A very Merry Halloween to you! You may also enjoy...
