Master Closet Renovation

My dream closet is huge. It's so big that there's a large table in the middle of it full of jewelry. There's a gorgeous round ottoman with fringe that I can sit on to put on my shoes. There's so much space in it that I can display purses, scarves, and dresses like its actually a boutique.

Yes, that is my dream closet and the feeling that I was going for when I designed my real closet. We renovated our master closet to be an elegant space where we could maximize storage and still feel like a king and a queen.

We are quite happy with the way it turned out and even though it's not large enough for an ottoman, it feels amazing.

What We Did

This is what our master closet looked like when we purchased our home. It had wire shelving on three walls that we decided had to go. We kept this type of shelving in our kids' closets, but we wanted something a little nicer for our space.

To start we took out all of the shelving and removed the baseboards and carpet. We used this paint sprayer to freshen up the ceiling with white ceiling paint. We filled any holes with drywall mud then we put on a fresh coat of Pearly White in eggshell.

Our master closet is located inside our master bath where there was a door to close off the closet. My husband originally had the idea to remove the door and I a-doored it, hehe. Since it was a fairly small closet I couldn't see the point in a door (that we tend to never shut) being in the way of clothing. In my experience closet doors tend to be good for one thing: hanging jackets or bags off of the door knob. I must say the closet looks so much more elegant without it. In order to achieve this we removed the door casing and frame and reframed it with three pieces of wood without the slots for hinges.

As you can see, there used to be brown carpet in our closet. I really don't care for this look considering that it sits within the bathroom. I didn't want to go from carpeted bedroom, to tiled bathroom, to carpeted closet. We tiled our closet and again it looks so much more elegant this way. It is important to note that if you are considering doing this type of renovation on your own carpeting can be an easier choice (if you are having it installed, but DIYing the tile) because it is one less area that you would have to tile yourself. But in my opinion, it was so worth it to tile the closet.

Next up, my husband measured and hung the brackets spaced about 12 inches apart to give us strong support. We cut the shelf boards down to size after painting them with a white semi-gloss. After the shelf boards were in place, my husband screwed them in from under the brackets.

We had to cut the metal closet rods down to size as well. We used our Craftsman miter saw and it worked like a champ. I never would have thought...

I found the shoe racks at Wayfair and just love them. They are so darn elegant and such a nice way to display and store shoes. You don't have to set them up as angled shoe racks, you can install the shelves to be level. You also don't have to stack them as we did, they could sit side by side. We purchased two of these shoe racks, by the way.

To finish this room off we installed a new oil rubbed bronze flush mount light fixture, a fancy oil rubbed bronze floor register, and replaced the floor boards with real wood ones. Our home is a modern sub division home that was built with somewhat cheaper materials, so originally the floor boards were the MDF material. This stuff gets torn up easily and is not as easy to repair as wood is. It is a little more costly to use real wood, but worth it.
